Have you ever noticed how much crap there is on the Internet? I’m sure you have, just as I’m sure my mentioning it isn’t an earthshattering piece of information.
Recently a reader on the blog commented:
“You have a very interesting blog it’s nice to see some real information for a change I like your writing…”
The words ‘it’s nice to see some real information’ caught me. For one I was delighted by the compliment, secondly I realized that there really is a lot of crap out there. Some of that crap is disguised as honest information. However, that disguise is fairly thin and shoddy. If you dig a little you realize that it’s just fluff trying to sell you something.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with making money through Internet marketing. I offer things for sale on this site, so I’m not against it. What I’m against is all the crap that is available, disguised as something beneficial. It really disgusts me.
Think about it, with the advent of the Internet we are already incredibly unproductive people. Toss in sites and blogs that are just crap and well intentioned unproductive surfing becomes a time sink as you sift through the refuse that permeats the Internet.
Of course you can Google what you’re looking for, however even this is flawed. Often junk sites pay to have their keywords come up on the first or second page. It’s how they drive traffic and then convince consumers to buy their crap.
So what can you do about it? How do you climb atop the pile o’ crap and conqueror it?
- Visit reliable sources. This step will take time, however as you gather up reliable sources of information you’ll cut down on the amount of crap you need view.
- If you visit a site and are bombarded with advertising you may want to leave. It’s not that there isn’t good content here, but if you can’t find it for advertising then stop wasting your time.
- While on a site, if you follow a link and it fires you off to another site, you may want to leave.
- Has the site you’re visiting been updated lately? Is the content fresh? If not, you may want to move on. This doesn’t mean their isn’t relevant information to be found, but you’re going to have to search for it.
- Be focused! Don’t get distracted while surfing. You’re bound to find a kinds of interesting links while you’re doing you’re research, by all means bookmark the site for a later visit, but stay focused on the present.
My final piece on ‘junk’ on the Internet are the sites that promise you can get rich quick and make $200/day online. I’m not saying this isn’t possible, in fact it is possible. However, it’s not something you put together in a quick hour, at least not in the beginning. With the present financial turmoil and job uncertainty many people are looking for some secondary income. Be warned that while the Internet can provide an income stream it isn’t as easy as it looks. Yes, you can do it, but be prepared to work for it and to spend some cash to get the ball rolling. Like any business it does require some capital to get things started.
So as you face off against the Internet today, know that you are armed to overcome the ‘crap’ that is out there.

That comment was true, Neil – your stuff is all interesting, varied, and useful.
Because you are so right – there are many blogs (and some I still subscribe to, though I wonder why…) when everything is just a cheap paper wrapping around something they want you to buy…
Keep doing what you’re doing here – we’ll keep coming back.

Brett -> I’m glad I’m not the only one thinks there is too much crap out there.

Neil,
It’s kind of funny, Friar & I keep talking about that all the time. One thing is for sure, we get really good at separating the wheat from the chaff in the digital world.

@Neil
If it’s not Scottish, it’s CRAP!
Heh heh! I love that reference… I haven’t thought of that old Mike Meyers skit for a while!
Brett and I discuss this all the tiem. I agree…I’m totally skeptical about the “get rich quick” snake-oil salesmen on the internet.
Oooh, apparently all we have to do is click buttons on our computer for an hour here are there, and we’ll earn a decent living.
…Yeah…RIGHT.
It’s all hot air, really, becasue nobody is making any widgets, or gizmos or growing crops. A lot of this internet stuff isnt’ producing anything TANGIBLE that you can eat, sit on, or drive to work in.
Still, I guess it IS possible to earn $200 a day. That’s roughly $50K a year. Not too unreasonable.
But most people who earn $50K tend to put in at least a 40 hour workweek.
The get-rich-quick Wanna-bee bloggers need to realize that.

I bought a blogging video package in April that was crap from a reliable source. The video’s just stop on and off throughout. It’s worthless. They did have a 30 day money back guarantee but because I was working on another project I didn’t get to it until July.
I’m out nearly $600. They ignore my emails. So stay away from The Blog Classroom. It’s not worth a dime!

great tips for making it through the sludge. One thing that always gets me to stick around is humor.

I like the thought of filtering what you look for and being somewhat cognizant of sites with numerous advertisements and off-shooting links, and I’m just curious for which kind of “surfer” did you have this article in mind?
There’s always that other saying, “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.”
Take Facebook for example. (crap for me but…)
1. Reliable source? maybe not… Popular? definitely!
2. Heavily advertised on? yes… but the enjoyment of the site far outweighs the endless advertisements for many.
3. Links to other sites? not so much… but other sites often link Facebook.
4. Updated lately? definitely…
5. Interesting links.. yes (who doesn’t want to click a link of an high school ex?)
I guess my question back to you is — how can we rely on the internet as a definitive source for anything?
Neil 01.25.09 at 9:05 pm
Cary, good point. I suppose I’m targetting the people who are looking for good advice. There are plenty of sites that will provide insight on how to live better, eat healthier, be smarter etc. Heck, I’m one of those sites. Unfortunately, some of those sites want to charge you money or sell you something. Many are just sites designed to do that one thing, they don’t offer any real value.
Sites like Facebook may not be much good for useful information, however they are great for networking and connecting with old friends. In that regard they have some value.
At the end of the day value is subjective. You may find value in something that I have no interest in at all and vice versa.
