Cary, good point. I suppose I'm targetting the people who are looking for good advice. There are plenty of sites that will provide insight on how to live better, eat healthier, be smarter etc. Heck, I'm one of those sites. Unfortunately, some of those sites want to charge you money or sell you something. Many are just sites designed to do that one thing, they don't offer any real value.

Sites like Facebook may not be much good for useful information, however they are great for networking and connecting with old friends. In that regard they have some value.

At the end of the day value is subjective. You may find value in something that I have no interest in at all and vice versa.

I like the thought of filtering what you look for and being somewhat cognizant of sites with numerous advertisements and off-shooting links, and I'm just curious for which kind of "surfer" did you have this article in mind?

There's always that other saying, "One person's junk is another person's treasure."

Take Facebook for example. (crap for me but...)
 1. Reliable source? maybe not... Popular? definitely!
 2. Heavily advertised on? yes... but the enjoyment of the site far outweighs the endless advertisements for many.
 3. Links to other sites? not so much... but other sites often link Facebook.
 4. Updated lately? definitely...
 5. Interesting links.. yes (who doesn't want to click a link of an high school ex?)

I guess my question back to you is -- how can we rely on the internet as a definitive source for anything?

I bought a blogging video package in April that was crap from a reliable source. The video's just stop on and off throughout. It's worthless. They did have a 30 day money back guarantee but because I was working on another project I didn't get to it until July.

I'm out nearly $600. They ignore my emails. So stay away from The Blog Classroom. It's not worth a dime!

The Bold Life’s last blog post..Forgiveness: A Bold Choice for A Loving Heart

@Neil

If it's not Scottish, it's CRAP!

Heh heh! I love that reference... I haven't thought of that old Mike Meyers skit for a while! :-D

Brett and I discuss this all the tiem. I agree...I'm totally skeptical about the "get rich quick" snake-oil salesmen on the internet.

Oooh, apparently all we have to do is click buttons on our computer for an hour here are there, and we'll earn a decent living.

...Yeah...RIGHT.

It's all hot air, really, becasue nobody is making any widgets, or gizmos or growing crops. A lot of this internet stuff isnt' producing anything TANGIBLE that you can eat, sit on, or drive to work in.

Still, I guess it IS possible to earn $200 a day. That's roughly $50K a year. Not too unreasonable.

But most people who earn $50K tend to put in at least a 40 hour workweek.

The get-rich-quick Wanna-bee bloggers need to realize that.

Neil,

It's kind of funny, Friar & I keep talking about that all the time. One thing is for sure, we get really good at separating the wheat from the chaff in the digital world.

Brett Legree’s last blog post..viking fridays - fate of norns.

That comment was true, Neil - your stuff is all interesting, varied, and useful.

Because you are so right - there are many blogs (and some I still subscribe to, though I wonder why...) when everything is just a cheap paper wrapping around something they want you to buy...

Keep doing what you're doing here - we'll keep coming back.
