Take Time For Rest

by Neil on January 28, 2009

Are you looking for some tips on how to  reduce stress in your life?

Perhaps find ways to be more productive? Maybe you just need to find a few minutes to rest.

Whatever the case may be I’m sure you’ll find some advice on the Internet. There are plenty of blogs that can instruct you on these things.

That’s right on many Self Help Blogs you’ll find advice on how to accomplish these tasks.

The articles have titles that sound like this:

  • 7 Ways to Remove Stress From Your Life
  • 12 Ways to Get Better Sleep
  • How to Permanently Reduce Stress In Your Life

You get the idea.

Now think about those titles. What do they all have in common?

Multiple steps are involved. It’s almost like a program that you need to follow. These posts are all about adding structure into your life and if you miss a step you’ll likely feel guilty and increase the stress that you are actually experiencing.

So here’s my advice and this comes from the message I heard this past Sunday at Church.

“Take time for rest” or in the words of Jesus,

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Mark 6: 31

Think about that quote for a moment. Because things were so busy and so many people were making demands Jesus says to his disciples “Come with me to a quiet place and get some rest.”

You don’t need a 12 step program to reduce stress, you just need to rest.

Your heart rests between every beat. Your lungs rest between every breath. Why shouldn’t you rest between events?

Modern life is busy and it’s turbulent and it puts great demands on our time. You have control though, you can choose to take some rest and I encourage you to do so.

When I was young we worked on our farm seven days a week. To this day I still struggle with resting. I’ll fill it up with exercise and play.
On a more positive note I do know that true rest doesn’t include the computer!
