Listen To Maintainers, Not To Losers: 5 Secrets To Keeping The Weight Off For Good

By Tom Venuto, NSCA-CPT, CSCS
www.BurnTheFat.com

I have very little interest these days in all the media-hyped stories of dramatic, rapid losses of body weight. “Big losers” don’t impress me, for numerous reasons. For example, weight is not fat. “Weight” could be composed of mostly lean tissue, or it could be mostly water weight. In fact, I would go a step further and point out that rapid loss of bodyweight correlates very highly with a greater chance of relapse, weight re-gain and long term failure.

So what does impress me? What gets my attention?

Movember, End Of The Mo

by Neil on December 5, 2008

Movember is finished and my Mo is gone. My wife is thrilled at this development. Over the course of the month donations came in and my final tally is $450 raised towards prostate cancer.

Thanks to everyone who donated. Remember you can make a difference, $20 may not seem like much but it can go a long way.

If you’d like to see a picture of my Mo, visit this post.

Reasons to Exercise

In the words of Brett from 6 Weeks “fail early, fail often”. That’s been the story for me these past weeks when it comes to exercise.

Now in all fairness I believe that Brett advocates learning from those mistakes. While I am in favour of that idea, I just haven’t been able to put it into practise. I just can’t get back on that horse.

It’s the most bizarre thing! I have a desire to be in better shape, I don’t want to be an tired old man when my son is ready to play ball. So I think it’s time to change things, yet I haven’t been able to put that motivation into practice. I don’t want to be a heart attack waiting to happen when I’m 50, yet I do nothing.

If It’s Not Scottish, It’s Crap!

Have you ever noticed how much crap there is on the Internet? I’m sure you have, just as I’m sure my mentioning it isn’t an earthshattering piece of information.

Recently a reader on the blog commented:

“You have a very interesting blog it’s nice to see some real information for a change I like your writing…”

The words ‘it’s nice to see some real information’ caught me. For one I was delighted by the compliment, secondly I realized that there really is a lot of crap out there. Some of that crap is disguised as honest information. However, that disguise is fairly thin and shoddy. If you dig a little you realize that it’s just fluff trying to sell you something.

Bloggers Unite: World Aids Day

by Neil on December 1, 2008

Today is World Aids Day. I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on this subject. I’m not. I know this.

What I also know is that AIDS isn’t going anywhere, we aren’t winning the battle. Infection rates continue to soar and the public continues to turn a blind eye. This is unacceptable given any situation and AIDS is no different.

Today’s post is being published along side thousands of other blog posts to help raise awareness of this disease. I may not be an expert on the subject, but I can become more aware of it and share that awareness with others.

Black Friday is upon us and the official Christmas shopping season has begun. That means retailers will have deals designed to lure customers into a spending frenzy.

Of course with the current economic situation many consumers will be holding back on their holiday spending. To assist in keeping Christmas spending under control I’ve developed a short list of things to keep in mind as you begin your Christmas shopping.

Don’t Take It Personally: Develop Thick Skin

by Neil on November 27, 2008

Blogging is an interesting medium. We bloggers put ourselves out there, offering opinions, thoughts, advice to those who care to read. As bloggers we don’t know what reaction our writing with have. It may be received with high praise, scathing criticism, or not be read at all.

Similarly if our writing is misread or misinterpreted and that impression is published on other blogs that information remains out there as a permanent record. A situation similar to this happened to me the other day. It made me realize that as a blogger growing thick skin is a job requirement, as it is for many other professions.

Avoid This Killer Weight Regain Mistake

Burn The Fat

If you want to burn off fat and keep it off permanently, there are a few things you absolutely must do, and a new study from Wake Forest University has just uncovered another one…

Previous research has concluded without a shred of doubt that high levels of exercise are one of the keys to keeping fat off and maintaining your ideal weight. In this new study just published in the October 2008 issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, researchers found for the first time, proof that the drop in physical activity that happens automatically during calorie restriction is directly correlated to weight regain.

We’ve known for some time that when you restrict calories, your level of non exercise physical activity (non exercise activity thermogenesis or NEAT), drops spontaneously, even if you don’t realize it’s happening.

The 4 Cs of Credit

by Neil on November 25, 2008

The current credit crunch has made the availability of Saloans from financial institutions harder to get. There is simply less money going around and financial institutions are being more diligent about who they lend to.

Over the past few weeks I’ve met with many clients looking for various types of financing. Everything from loans to mortgages. In many of the cases I felt the applications were borderline regarding their ability of gaining approval. As an advisor in the bank it’s my job to make the application as attractive as possible, without fudging numbers, to assist my clients in gaining approval. To accomplish that I use the 4 Cs of Credit and write my comments to the underwriter to reflect the clients situation.

Movember Update: How Cancer Effects Us All

by Neil on November 24, 2008

The month of Movember has been going well. My Mo has been growing in nicely and my wife has informed me that she can’t wait until December arrives and I shave it off. Fund raising has been great with $300 in donations (not including what will be coming from co-workers) raised to date. Naturally, the more money we can raise towards Prostate Cancer the better. If you would like to donate to my Mo please feel free to do so at www.movember.com/ca/donate, please reference my registration number 1383686.

Today I want to spend some time discussing how Cancer effects us all.
